Farm Life

Bonjour, amis et famille! Please be patient with me as I get our blog officially up to date. In this entry, you'll find some pictures of our fine furry friends. O is currently learning how to butcher two veal (taken to what Emmanuelle refers to as 'the killing place' two days ago), equipped with his notebook and camera. So stay tuned! Lots more to come!

Les cochon -all three are lovingly referred to as "Kiki."

Le chaton - the world's sweetest barn kitten, Philou. We suspect Philou's middle name is danger, as he highly enjoys jumping from frighteningly high places around the farm, taunting the animals by walking along their fences, and falling asleep very-well hidden in huge piles of hay that we frequently fling to the cows for meals.

There's O! Standing in the entrance to the barn - this was before he went to town cleaning and organizing the entire entryway and shelves. Below, two 'teenage' ladies - Etoil and Dulcine. They are very sweet and enjoy licking my pants.

I love this picture: morning on the farm (about 10am). The elevation we're at here is about 500km, I think. To put things in perspective - the building you see just there on the right is the beginning of the barn - the first room is kitchen-esque and used for cheese-making. On the left is a 'leftover' shack-esque barn they use for storage. The house is out of the picture, and located to the left and behind where I'm standing.

Below, some walnuts we gathered. Yucky ones for the pigs, good ones for our salads and pies! Then, O and Sozie smile for the camera. This pic was taken before we herded another group of cows to the barn - currently, there are about 15 ladies and one bull all lined up on that row. On the other side is one of the goat pens (they are separated based on age).

Here we are - on the way to a neighbor's farm to collect a baby cow that had been born a mere hour before we arrived (and yes, I'm riding on the back of Gabriel's tractor).

Here you'll see Gabriel attempting to get the mom away from her baby. And on the right (below)- voila! I think that picture was taken after the baby was a few days old. Her ma currently resides just across the room from her.

Say Cheese! Or... pomme de terre (potatoes). I sorted about ten sacks of potatoes. We're going to be eating them all winter. Anybody have some good recipes?

There's good 'ole Philou a.k.a. "Danger", at it again. On the right, our cute "chevrettes" - baby goats. They've since moved to a bigger pen in the barn (which I built myself, thankyouverymuch). And the last picture is of Chaussette (yes, for those of you Frenchies, that does translate to 'sock') - the barn dog. Very sweet, loves sprinting up and down the barn, and longs for the day that the gate to the goat pen breaks down so she can frolic freely with them. Up next: making turnip sauerkraut!
